HABITAT:  Island of Madagascar; eastern from the Antainambalana River to the Mananara River.

FUN FACT:   This species is considered to be the world's largest pollinator.  They have a mutualistic relationship with the traveler's palm tree.  They are one of the only species that can open the tree's flowers.

DESCRIPTION:   Primates with a prominent nose, black and white fur (varying in patterns) and longer fur around the ears. Their fur is well suited for the cold and wet environment they are found. They can be up to 20 inches from head to toe with a 24-inch tail and weighing in at about 9 pounds. They live in groups of 2-5 (usually mating pairs and their young), sometimes groups can reach up to 16 and divide into smaller groups during the wet season. They mark their territory by using scent and are notorious for their loud vocalizations and calls that can be heard up to a half-mile away.
