WOOD DUCK

SCIENTIFIC NAME:  Aix sponsa
 

HABITAT:  They are widely distributed throughout North America, with some populations migrating north for breeding and over-wintering spots in the southern states and Mexico. 

They prefer the edges of swamps, sluggish streams, and wooded marshes.  

CONSERVATION STATUS:  Least Concern

FUN FACT:  The wood duck is an invasive species in England and it is illegal to release them into the wild. 

DIET:  These dabbling ducks feed from the surface of water or off the ground, eating berries, acorns, seeds, and insects. 

DESCRIPTION:  Considered to be one of the most "pretty" waterfowl, males are iridescent chestnut and green with ornate feathers, and a crested head.  The female is warm brown with gray plumage and a less distinctive head crest, they have a white teardrop shape around their eyes and a dark blue patch on their wings.
